Meet the Teachers

Course Description

1st grade is all about opening student’s eyes to art to spark curiosity and wonder. First grade receives an introduction to all materials, and learns basic necessary skill sets including cutting, gluing, tracing, and clean up expectations. We learn about artists such as Monet and Mondrian.

In 2nd grade students are introduced to texture, mixing mediums, spatial perspective, overlapping, and scale. In sculpture, students create pinch pots out of clay. This year students make connections to science through art, and learn about the artistic styles of Cubism, Pop Art and Impressionism.

In 3rd grade students learn to create tone, tints and shades within their art.  3rd graders begin to explore more three dimensional arts by building sculptures, using textiles and constructing coil pots. This year students explore art from different cultures and discover art throughout history. Art styles include ancient Greek potters, Fauvism, and the graphic arts.

4th grade dives into more complex versions of ceramics learning techniques such as relief carving and intaglio on clay slabs. 4th graders hone their observational skills through still life drawings, landscapes, and printmaking. This year students are given more freedom in their medium choices to foster independence through choice-based art.

5th graders learn the technical skills to 1- and 2-point perspective drawings. To continue building skills in three-dimension, students combine previous learned skills in clay into a final ceramic project. 5th graders also continue to study a variety of cultural arts, create radial designs and typography while integrating math with measuring and scaling skills.
